Is GreatFon Still Working? What Replaced It (2026)
GreatFon is retired: at our August 28, 2026 check greatfon.com and greatfon.io both redirected to Dumpor, which publishes a page saying the brand merged into it.

GreatFon no longer exists as its own site. At our August 28, 2026 check both of its domains answered with an HTTP 301 — a permanent redirect: greatfon.com and greatfon.io each sent us to dumpor.io, a differently-branded anonymous Instagram viewer. No greatfon address we tested still serves a GreatFon page.
Unusually for this category, that ending is not a mystery. Dumpor publishes a page at dumpor.io/greatfon/ headed "Greatfon has joined Dumpor", which lists greatfon.com and greatfon.io as "previous official domains" and dumpor.io as the "current official domain", and answers its own question "Is Greatfon shut down?" with "No. Greatfon was merged into Dumpor." The redirects we followed do exactly what that page says they should.
If you typed greatfon.com expecting the story viewer you used to use and landed somewhere called Dumpor, this page is for you. What follows is the dated status report: what GreatFon was, when its own site stopped serving pages, who carries the name now, and what to use instead. Every observation carries its check date and is reproducible from a browser or a terminal.

Both GreatFon domains resolve through the same Cloudflare name-server pair as dumpor.io — jake.ns.cloudflare.com and mia.ns.cloudflare.com (Google Public DNS). That is consistent with the consolidation Dumpor describes, but DNS on its own proves nothing about who owns what.
Is GreatFon still working?
The tool people used is still reachable. The brand they used it under is not.
- greatfon.com — no. It returned HTTP 301 to https://dumpor.io/ over https, from a Cloudflare edge, and served no page of its own.
- greatfon.io — no. Same 301, same destination. This was the more recent home of the viewer: the Internet Archive's last successful capture of it, on March 10, 2026, is titled "Free Instagram Story Viewer & Downloader Without Account | Greatfon" and carries a single search box.
- Every other greatfon address — no. greatfon.net, greatfon.app, greatfon.site and greatfon.org have no DNS records at all, and neither do the nine other extensions we tried.
- dumpor.io — yes, it loads. The homepage rendered a username field with the placeholder "Enter public @nickname, user name, or a link to account", a menu of seven tools (story viewer, story downloader, profile viewer, reels viewer, highlights viewer, tagged viewer, and a followers-and-following viewer), and a language switcher listing more than forty languages. We recorded that the interface renders and that the page presented no Instagram login prompt and contained no password field; we did not run a public profile through it, so treat "it loads and offers the tool" as the claim here, not "we verified its results."
So "GreatFon is gone" and "GreatFon still works" are both defensible, and they are really the same sentence: the service continues under a different name, at the address the old one hands you to.
What GreatFon was
GreatFon was a free, web-based anonymous Instagram story viewer — and an old one by the standards of this lane. The Internet Archive's first capture of greatfon.com is dated April 9, 2016, which makes it a decade-old name in a category where most sites do not last two years.
Its last working homepage tells you what it offered. The September 9, 2024 capture is titled "Instagram story viewer anonymously", repeats that line as its H1, and describes itself in its meta description as a viewer where "you can easy watch Instagram stories, profiles, followers anonymously. Search by tag or locations, view users photos and videos." Two search boxes sat on the page — a plain "Search here..." and a "Search instagram profile, location or tag" — so the pitch was broader than Stories alone: profiles, tags and locations too. No Instagram login, no account, free and ad-funded, like the rest of the field.
The later greatfon.io homepage put the same offer in the title: "Free Instagram Story Viewer & Downloader Without Account | Greatfon" (March 10, 2026 capture).
What happened to greatfon.com
The archive record and the operator's own pages tell a consistent story. Capture by capture:
- April 9, 2016 — the Internet Archive's first capture of greatfon.com, HTTP 200.
- September 9, 2024 — the last capture of greatfon.com that returned a page. Everything after it is a redirect.
- September 20, 2024 — the archive's first capture of greatfon.io, HTTP 200: the same brand, on a new domain.
- November 25, 2024 — the first captured 301 from greatfon.com to greatfon.io. We re-checked the recorded destination at the December 1, 2024, February 24, April 7, July 1, August 7, September 13 and December 24, 2025 and February 28, 2026 captures: greatfon.io every time.
- March 10, 2026 — the last capture of greatfon.io that returned a page, still GreatFon-branded.
- May 12, 2026 — greatfon.io captures start failing, with HTTP 520, the Cloudflare status raised when the origin server behind a domain returns a response Cloudflare cannot interpret.
- July 9, 2026 — the first capture in which greatfon.io itself redirects to dumpor.io. That is the earliest date we can evidence for the move onto the Dumpor brand; between-capture gaps mean it may have happened earlier.
- August 28, 2026 — our check: greatfon.com and greatfon.io both 301 straight to dumpor.io, with no GreatFon page in between.
Read together: a brand that moved house once, from .com to .io in late 2024, and then retired into a different name in 2026. Two things separate this from the endings we documented for InstaNavigation, StoriesDown and Picuki — the destination here is a working Instagram viewer rather than a dead domain, a TikTok tool or a block page, and somebody put their name to the change in public.
Who is using the GreatFon name now?
Dumpor, openly — and, as far as we could find, nobody else.
- The name is claimed on the record. dumpor.io publishes a page at /greatfon/ titled "Greatfon Is Now Part of Dumpor (Official Site: dumpor.io)" and headed "Greatfon has joined Dumpor". Its "Official domains" block names dumpor.io as the current official domain, greatfon.com and greatfon.io as previous official domains, and the expected behaviour as "both previous domains should lead to dumpor.io". Its FAQ says "Greatfon was merged into Dumpor", and the page closes with "Greatfon is a former brand."
- The redirects match the claim. That is the part worth checking yourself, because it takes five seconds and requires trusting neither them nor us: type greatfon.com into the address bar and watch where you land. Dumpor's own page proposes exactly that test.
- There is no clone swarm. This is the rare dead name in this category with no look-alikes squatting on it: thirteen greatfon extensions we queried returned no DNS records, and the two that resolve both point at Dumpor.
- There is no app wearing the name. Apple's public lookup endpoint returned zero software results for "greatfon" at our check.
- The same page exists for SmiHub. dumpor.io also publishes /smihub/ — "Smihub Official Site Is Now Dumpor" — stating that "Smihub was renamed to Dumpor" and that smihub.com redirects there. It does: smihub.com returned a 301 to dumpor.io at our check, exactly as greatfon.com did.
None of that is an accusation, and none of it needs to be — a site that announces a merger, names the old domains and points them at itself is doing more than most brands in this lane ever do. But a claim is a claim: we did not inspect ownership records, and nothing we checked proves who ran greatfon.com. The rule that survives is the one every inherited name in this category earns: whatever trust the original built does not transfer automatically. Judge dumpor.io on what it observably is today.
One thing that cuts the other way, and is worth knowing before you trust a search result: while greatfon.com has no look-alikes, smihub.net, smihub.io and smihub.org all returned HTTP 200 under the SmiHub name at the same check, each with its own separate site. Dumpor's SmiHub page warns about exactly that — "search results may show pages on other domains that still use the Smihub name" — and the warning generalises. An old brand name in a search result is not evidence of anything.
Is GreatFon anonymous and safe?
For greatfon.com the question retires with the brand. For the site its traffic now lands on, the honest answer has two halves.
The anonymity half holds, structurally. A viewer that never signs in to Instagram cannot appear in anyone's story viewer list — the list Instagram's own help pages describe — because there is no account of yours making the request. That is where the anonymity in this whole category comes from, and it is why a tool asking for your Instagram password is an automatic fail rather than a stronger version of the same idea. The dumpor.io page we fetched presented no Instagram login prompt and contained no password field, its About page (last updated August 19, 2025 by its own line) says the tool works "without logging in" and "cannot access private accounts", and its GreatFon page tells readers to leave any page that asks for an Instagram password or promises private accounts. That is the right advice, and it is rarer in this lane than it should be.
"Completely" is where it stops. You are anonymous to the person you look up, not to the site you use. dumpor.io's own banner advertises "100% anonymous — zero tracking"; we did not audit that claim, and no visitor can from outside. Any free viewer can log your IP address and every username you search, and free here means ad-funded. These tools also operate outside Instagram's platform terms, which is part of the reason names in this lane keep moving.
Three rules survive whichever domain you land on, and they are the same ones our anonymous Instagram viewers review applies to the whole field: never enter your Instagram password into a third-party viewer; treat any promise of private-account content as a signal about the operator rather than a real capability, for the reasons set out in our private Instagram viewer guide; and assume nothing you view through a free tool persists — Stories expire in 24 hours and one-shot viewers keep nothing.
What replaced GreatFon
Dumpor did, by its own account and by the redirect. Credit where it is due, because this is a better inheritance than most dead names in the category get.
dumpor.io covers more content types than GreatFon's last homepage advertised — seven separate tools at our check, against GreatFon's two search boxes — and it publishes the things a free viewer usually does not: an About page with a dated last-updated line, a stated public-only policy, a removal and DMCA route, and a page explaining what it will not do. It asks for no Instagram login, it is free, and it is the address GreatFon's own traffic now arrives at. For a one-off anonymous look at a public account's Stories, the interface at least offers the tool — though the same caveat applies here as everywhere else on this page: we did not run a public profile through it, so we cannot tell you its results are correct.

The structural difference is what happens after you close the tab, and GreatFon's own ending is the argument for it. A one-shot viewer shows what is live at that moment and keeps nothing; if you were opening GreatFon for the same handful of accounts every few days, you were tracking by hand through a tool built for single glances — and when the name changed, the bookmark went with it. Dumpor publishes a page headed "Greatfon has joined Dumpor" that names greatfon.com and greatfon.io as previous official domains and says "Greatfon was merged into Dumpor." At our August 28, 2026 check both domains redirected there.
Is GreatFon anonymous and safe?
The question now applies to dumpor.io, since that is where GreatFon addresses lead. Anonymity to the person you look up holds structurally: a viewer that never signs in to Instagram cannot appear in anyone’s story viewer list, because no account of yours makes the request. The dumpor.io page we fetched on August 28, 2026 presented no Instagram login prompt and contained no password field, and its About page says the tool works without logging in and cannot access private accounts. "Completely anonymous" is still the wrong phrase: the site itself can log your IP address and every username you search, it is ad-funded, and it operates outside Instagram’s platform terms. Never enter your Instagram password into any third-party viewer.
What replaced GreatFon?
Dumpor, by its own account and by the redirect — dumpor.io is where greatfon.com and greatfon.io both landed at our August 28, 2026 check, and it covers more content types than GreatFon advertised, free and with no Instagram login. Is GreatFon free?
It was, and its successor is. GreatFon was a free, ad-funded web viewer that required no account, and dumpor.io — where GreatFon addresses now lead — offered its tools free with no account required at our August 28, 2026 check, advertising "$0 forever" on its own banner. In this category free means ad-funded, so expect display ads and third-party tracking tags as the actual cost, and note that we did not audit the "zero tracking" line the same banner carries.
Does GreatFon show private accounts?
No — and neither does anything else. Content on a private Instagram account is served only to approved followers, so it is not reachable by any anonymous third-party tool, whatever the marketing copy says. Dumpor, which now carries the GreatFon name, states the same thing on its own About page: it works with public material only and cannot access private accounts, and its GreatFon page tells readers to leave any site that promises otherwise. IGDetective works with public accounts only for exactly the same reason.
