How the Instagram unfollow tracker works

Enter the public username
Type the handle (with or without the @) into the box at the top of the page. Any public Instagram account works; private accounts are out of scope for every legitimate tool.

Review the baseline snapshot (followers, following, most recent followers)
IGDetective records the account's current follower count, following count, and most recent followers the moment you look it up. That snapshot is the fixed point every future unfollow is measured against.

A free account keeps that baseline in place so later refreshes have something to compare against. From here on, anyone who disappears from the follower list is logged as an unfollow with a date.
Why no tool can show past unfollows
Instagram does not publish unfollow history, and it never has. A tracker can only read an account's current follower and following list — a snapshot, not a ledger. An unfollow becomes visible only as an absence: someone present in yesterday's snapshot is missing from today's.
That means the earliest unfollow any tool can detect is the first one after its own first snapshot. A product that claims to show who unfollowed an account last year, or before you added it, is not reading real data — it is guessing. IGDetective starts the same way every honest tracker has to: with a baseline snapshot, taken the moment you add the account.
How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram
Compare your current followers list against an older copy — a screenshot from a few weeks back — and note who is missing. Or open Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information (some app versions still show ☰ → Your activity → Download your information). Pick your Instagram profile, choose "Some of your information," tick "Followers and following," select JSON and "All time," then create the export.
The ZIP contains connections/followers_and_following/followers_1.json (everyone who follows you) and following.json; compare two exports taken days apart — anyone in the older one missing from the newer one unfollowed you in between. (recently_unfollowed_profiles.json in that folder lists accounts you unfollowed, not people who unfollowed you.) Honest scope of an unfollow tracker
Legitimate tools are bounded by what is publicly visible on Instagram. Being clear about that boundary is the difference between a real tool and a scam.

The public/private boundary is Instagram's own: on a public profile the follower list is visible to anyone, on a private one only to approved followers (see Instagram's help page on public and private accounts). Instagram has never added an unfollow notification, as How-To Geek confirms (accessed August 27, 2026). IGDetective operates entirely within Instagram's platform terms using only publicly available data. Profile owners who would rather not be tracked at all can request removal.

How does the Instagram unfollow tracker work?
It takes a snapshot of the account’s follower and following lists when you add it, then compares new snapshots against the last one. Anyone missing from the follower list is recorded as an unfollow with the date it was detected.
Can it show who unfollowed an account before I started tracking?
No. Instagram does not publish unfollow history, so no tool can show unfollows that happened before its first snapshot. Tracking starts the day you add the account.
How can I see who unfollowed me on Instagram?
Instagram does not notify you. Compare your followers list against an older screenshot or your Download Your Information export, or track your own account here so every future unfollow is logged automatically.
How do you know who stopped following you on Instagram?
A tracker records your follower list on a schedule — daily on paid tracking — and lists the accounts that disappear between snapshots.
Does Instagram tell you when someone unfollows you?
No. Unfollows are silent; the only visible sign is a lower follower count.
Can I see who doesn’t follow me back?
Yes. Compare the following and followers lists; the tracker’s dashboard shows accounts you follow that don’t follow you back once your own account is tracked.
Do I need to log in to Instagram or give a password?
No. IGDetective never asks for your Instagram credentials. Public accounts are tracked from public data; private accounts cannot be tracked.
How often are unfollows checked?
Snapshots are refreshed on the tracked account’s schedule (daily on paid tiers). Unfollows appear after the first refresh that no longer includes the account.
